Are you prepared?: On Saturday May 11, as part of National Emergency Preparedness Week, the Sechelt Community Associations Forum (SCAF), held a town hall entitled “Are you Prepared?” Approximately 125 people attended. The event was opened by Mayor Henderson; Councillors Alton Toth and Brenda Rowe as well as MLA Nicholas Simons were also in attendance. The objectives of the forum were twofold: to educate people on how to prepare, in advance, their household for an emergency; and, to start the process for developing Neighbourhood Plans. In disaster recovery, social networks are vital. Erin Wilson of FireSmart presented the role of SCRD in emergency management. This was followed by a presentation from Kathleen Sutherland who presented how her community, Metchosin, B.C., organized neighbourhoods for emergency situations. Diana Mumford then presented the “nuts and bolts” of how to be prepared both personally and to organize a group in your neighbourhood.
