The last general meeting of the Elphinstone Community Association (ECA) was held on Wednesday and will resume again in September. They had guest speaker Diana Mumford, the Sunshine Coast’s own Ferry Warrior and chair of the Southern Sunshine Coast Ferry Advisory Committee. She advocates for improved ferry service by creating conduits for information exchange between BC Ferries and you. Since 2015, Diana and her team of volunteers have been working to find out just how BC Ferries works and she explained to us how we can help them affect change. This is just one of the many fascinating guest speakers the ECA has delivered this year, and I’m a huge advocate of attending these meetings that help us engage in our community. How lucky are we that the ECA brought in Kelly Folley of Cover the Coast to talk about affordable housing in Area E? Or Chris Basil on behalf of the Sunshine Coast Farmer’s Institute to talk about how farming is at the heart of Elphinstone’s past and present? There’s been an interesting guest speaker each month, and our area director, Donna McMahon comes out to talk about all the things happening here in our neighbourhood. We get face-to-face contact with our elected official and can have a real conversation with her in these meetings. I may be aging myself here but that’s really cool you guys.

The best thing you can do to support this amazing group of people is get a membership! It’s open to all residents of Area E (those of us wedged between Roberts Creek and Gibsons) and is $10 for the entire year. This supports the twice annual socials hosted at Chaster House and helps the membership grow and have sway in our government. More members means more power to shout out when something affects our neighbourhood. You also get put on their sweet mailing list to get a monthly update on meetings, parties and events.

My articles have been sparse lately as I’ve been busy with farming at Henry Reed Produce and event planning with Coastal Hosts, but you can always help me by sending leads or topic suggestions. If you are a resident of Area E with a story to tell, I would love to have you as a guest columnist and feature your writing in a future article. Email me at [email protected]
