St. Hilda’s Anglican Church in Sechelt has invited Charles Rus, director of music and liturgical arts at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Medina, Washington to give a workshop on music and liturgy next Saturday, May 3.

Rus specializes in writing and arranging liturgical music with the goal of a seamless flow from words to music to silence. A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Rus received degrees from the Eastman School of Music, the University of Michigan, and, as a Fulbright Scholar, the Folkwang Hochscule fur Musik in Essen, Germany.

During his 20 years in San Francisco, he was an organist for the San Francisco Symphony, organ teacher at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, organist and choir director for Temple Emanu-El, and music director at St. John's Episcopal Church.

The Saturday interdenominational music workshop will provide a great opportunity for choir members and music leaders to learn new hymns, service music and anthems, many of which composed or arranged by Rus. More information of the workshop is available by calling St. Hilda’s at 604-885-5019 and on-line registration is available on bookwhen.com/sthilda.

The workshop will be followed by a Choral Evensong featuring music attributes to Julian of Norwich at 4:30 p.m. and an organ recital featuring music of Philip Glass and J. S. Bach at 5:15 p.m. All are welcome to these two events celebrating pipe organ music. Admission is free. A free-will collection will be taken during Evensong to support the outreach ministries of St. Hilda’s.
