Coast Scene: Teams participate in Davis Bay Sandcastle Competition

Top prizes for youth teams were awarded to the Rainbow Donuts, The Lions, and The New Family.

Twenty-seven registered teams competed in the annual Davis Bay Sandcastle Competition at Mission Point on July 21. The event is a project of the Sunshine Coat Lions Club of Sechelt, which laid out the field of play, sold branded merchandise and sponsored prizes. Musician Jim Taylor serenaded the three-hour construction process, which proceeded apace despite hazy skies and a brief windstorm.

Top prizes for youth teams were awarded to the Rainbow Donuts, The Lions, and The New Family. Winners in the family category were The Hobbits, The Horse Spirit and The Aviators — with honourable mention to Squidward. Top finishers for groups were The Cool Trucks, Captain Hummingbird and Tiny Shovels. Captain Hummingbird also netted the People’s Choice Award.

Octopus and tortoise motifs dominated numerous entries, while traditionalists incorporated sea lettuce and mollusk shells into their sandy citadels. Additional team photos are available online at michaelgurney.com/culture.
