Ready to get out after a year of lockdown? The Gibsons Yacht Club (GYC) has an opportunity for you.
Recently, members of GYC’s club boat program did a regular maintenance check on Pavlova, one of two GYC club boats.
“We make sure our club boats are safe and ready to go,” said Jim Forward. “They are for our members’ use all year long.”
The club boat program is unique. You don’t have to own a boat or pay for its maintenance. Instead, you pay about $700 for a full year’s use of one of two GYC sailboats that can easily accommodate four.
If you’ve always wanted to sail or find out about boating, this could be your opportunity.
“Experienced boaters are always willing to help and teach,” said Forward, who has been sailing since he was 10. Each member gets seven consecutive days use of the boats per year, and daily or overnight use when a boat is available. There’s no limit on when you can go out, unless the boat is booked.
Some like day sailing, such as going around Keats, or just exploring. Others explore Desolation Sound with other club members, or the Gulf Islands.
Club boat members can crew in winter racing events in the harbour.
“It’s a good deal,” said Hugh Willson, past GYC commodore.
“Our members have a blast at doing things that appeal to them. GYC has a close relationship with the Power Squadron, so there are courses and training available at reasonable prices.
“Fellowship is important,” he added. “We also have an active social program.”
