On the evening of Wednesday, Feb.12, Dr. Mark Jaccard of Simon Fraser University came to the Gibsons Public Market and gave a 40-minute presentation on Paths to Reduce Canada’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions. Dr. Jaccard’s presentation was aimed at helping climate-concerned citizens to do three things: 1) detect deliberate delusions and inadvertent myths; 2) elect climate-sincere politicians who do effective policy; and 3) cut most personal emissions by changing how we heat our homes and how we travel. His presentation was followed by 80 minutes of questions and answers in an educational and vigorous dialogue with the 60 people attending.
Dr. Jaccard is a distinguished professor at SFU’s School of Resource and Environmental Management and the current chair and CEO of the BC Utilities Commission. He has worked in B.C., Canada, and internationally on climate policy. His most recent book (published in 2020) is The Citizen’s Guide to Climate Success: Overcoming Myths that Hinder Progress. His presentation on Feb.12, organized by the BlueAct Marine Society, is the first of nine presentations on climate action to be held in 2025.
