Celebrating 20 years and counting

Capilano University Mountain Bike Operations Program (MBO) students are hosting an event Saturday, April 28 at the Sprockids Bike Park in Gibsons to celebrate 20 successful years of the Sprockids Bike Program.

Come out, bring the family and enjoy exciting activities during a day of fun with the riding community in an event devoted to the celebration of the Sprockids program founded by Doug Detwiller.

What started off as a self-esteem and anger-management program for school students, quickly evolved into a multi-faceted program that has now successfully engaged thousands of young people in mountain biking while teaching them important life skills and values. Sprockids has spread across 17 different countries worldwide and opened Sprockids Bike Park, the first municipal bike park in North America.

"The Sprockids program is truly a Sunshine Coast success story where thousands of Sunshine Coast youth have learned the sport of mountain biking and the many benefits of a healthy outdoor lifestyle," said Sheane Reid, parks planner for the Sunshine Coast Regional District. "It also most encouraging to know that the young people who have experienced the Sprockids program also have an appreciation for the environment and respect for other users of backcountry."

Sprockids Fun Day will showcase a multitude of activities and events starting with a VIP walk for land managers and media to look at the work done by the MBO students and view the new park signage at 9:30 a.m.

Starting at 10, activities will include skills park sessions, family rides, a free lunch as well as a jump demo with appearances from pro riders such as Ben Glassen and Geoff Gulevich. Don't worry if you don't have your own bike or gear, you can still come out as there will be demo bikes and gear on site so everyone can enjoy the fun. The day will finish around 2 p.m. with a ceremony including draw prizes.
