The Sunshine Coast Disc Club (SC/DC) partnered with Tapworks Brewing to host its fifth disc golf tournament of the spring/summer season on Aug. 14 with nearly 40 competitors in four divisions taking on a challenging layout at Shirley Macey Park in Gibsons for the Tapworks Open.

The novice Recreational Division featured a first-time tournament winner with Joe Angelini scorching the field by a whopping five strokes. Ryan Chilibeck and Mike Fox battled things out for second place, but some late bogeys from Fox put him back of Chilibeck by three strokes.

Another tournament, another first-time winner in the Intermediate Division. This time though it was a familiar face facing off against a familiar foe in a sudden death playoff for the victory. Sasha Kliewer got the best of David Lacroix in a one-hole playoff, earning some revenge for the playoff victory that Lacroix got over him back at the SC/DC Invitational in June.

In the Advanced Division, club Vice President Trevor Connors finally earned himself a Tour victory after four consecutive second place finishes on the season. Connors bested second place Jordan Newman by a whopping four strokes and went wire to wire, leading the event from hole 1 through hole 18.

What a finish in the Open Division! Anthony Paul finished his round with four consecutive birdies to take a two-stroke victory over both Dean Miles and Matt Foulger. Paul also won the “Longest Drive” competition for the field along with Callum McDonald (Advanced), Cory Mosychuck (Intermediate) and Ryan Chilibeck (Recreational).

The club then took over the Tapworks tap room to hand out hardware while also announcing details for the season ending Tour Championship on Sept. 17 and 18. Interested players are encouraged to come join the league on Wednesday nights at 6 p.m. at Shirley Macey Park.

Disc golf, also called frisbee golf, is an outdoor sport with rules similar to traditional golf in that the player with the fewest shots (throws) wins the game. In disc golf, competitors throw a disc (frisbee) around trees, shrubs and other natural objects on their way to a basket target.
