St. John's United Church is throwing a community celebration this Sunday and everyone is invited.
A 3 p.m. on June 26, the church will mark the realization of St. John's becoming officially a fully inclusive faith community.
The 16-month process began in 2009 when the congregation established becoming an affirming ministry as one of three primary goals for 2010. The ensuing in-depth exploration helped to establish a real understanding of what this decision would encompass.
An affirming ministry means that all people are welcome in the church and into the church family, are welcome at the communion table and in all ministries of the church. Participation of persons from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds, all abilities, all sexual orientations and gender identities, people of all races, religions, ages and economic circumstances are accepted and embraced, as they are.
In January 2011, a 94 per cent congregational vote in favour finalized the adoption of this status at St. John's. Based on Jesus' example of unconditional love, St. John's has chosen to openly and joyously honour and include everyone. St. John's also envisions reaching out to be involved with local, regional, national and international groups addressing inclusion.
