According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the winter solstice in 2024 in British Columbia will occur on Saturday, December 21, at 1:20 am. The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of winter. It marks the moment when half of the Earth is tilted the farthest away from the sun.

Wednesday, December 18, the forecast is for a mix of sun and cloud and a daytime high of seven degrees and five degrees overnight. On Thursday and Friday there will be rain for most of the day and a daytime high of eight degrees. On Saturday the temperature will reach 11 degrees by 12 pm with a 49 per cent chance of rain.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), there are specific requirements for what counts as a white Christmas on December 25.

"There must be at least two centimetres of snow on the ground on Christmas morning by 7 am local time," according to the ECCC.

The likelihood of snow falling in the qathet region on December 25 is very low, or a 10 per cent chance, according to the ECCC historical Christmas snowfall data page.
