The incoming holiday winter season is off to a damp start in the qathet region and for most of the Sunshine Coast. The Weatherhood forecast for Friday, December 20, is for up to 10 millimetres of rain throughout the day, and a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius.
Saturday, December 21 is solstice, an astronomical event that marks the shortest day and longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere. It is forecast that Saturday, Sunday and into next week, there is a 98 per cent chance of showers, and up 17 millimetres of rain will accumulate.
This afternoon the sun will set at 4:21 pm and tomorrow, the sun will rise at 8:11 am. The wind is predicted to blow gusts of up to 15 kilometres today and up to 18 kilometres on Saturday afternoon.
Sunday December 22 is the last Powell River Farmers' Market of 2024 and the market will be closed on Sunday, January 5, 2025.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), in conjunction with Powell River RCMP’s CounterAttack program, are launching this year’s Project Red Ribbon campaign to create awareness around people driving motor vehicles while impaired.
The Peak reported that the holiday season is the busiest time on most social calendars and the risk for impaired driving is high. Wearing a red ribbon, or having one on a vehicle, is showing commitment to never driving impaired, and to keep the sober driving message out for people to see.
