MEMORIAL BOWL: Top logger sports competitors from the qathet region and beyond will be at the amphitheatre located in Willingdon Beach Park on Marine Avenue, July 13 and July 14.

Powell River Logger Sports is back in full swing with fierce competitors ready to swing an axe and climb to death-defying heights at Loggers Memorial Bowl on Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 14.

The 2024 summer event is sanctioned by Canadian Loggers Sports Association (CANLOG) and will host world-renowned champions, Canadian and American national teams, and local competitors at Willingdon Beach on Marine Avenue.

Logger sports coordinator and competitor Michelle Silvester said she is excited about both the local and out of town folks who will gather at the amphitheatre to give their best at this year's event.

"The Powell River competitors we have so far are Keenan Young, Verjall Ham, Julian Welp, Rosalea Pagani, Alicia Walsh,  and myself," said Silvester. “Allison Briscoe, an out-of-town competitor, beat her own record of 14.46 seconds in the single buck event with a time of 12.01 seconds back in 2022. In 2023 she set a world record in the Netherlands."

Another fierce competitor at this year's Powell River Logger Sports is Andrea Hand, who Silvester said placed second in the 2023 Stihl Timbersports Women’s Championship four times, and ranked sixth in the World International Stihl Timbersports series.

"Watch for Mitch Hewitt competing in the open springboard," said Silvester. "He has competed many times in Powell River and has completed this four-board event in under a minute."

Silvester said Stirling Hart, who is considered a fan favourite, has won many championship titles and recently was the winner of the 2023 Stihl Timbersports Champions trophy.

Similar to previous years, the logger sports weekend attracts qathet region food and artist vendors to Willingdon Beach, but this year brings a new twist. Carlson Community Club will be hosting a beer garden. The Peak reported previously that Powell River Logger Sports Association was earmarked to receive $10,200 for 2024, giving the event a much needed boost to keep the games going.

The logger sports carving competition began July 10 at Willingdon Beach, near the parking lot across from the Chopping Block.
