The family of Tori Dunn is gathering in Surrey on Wednesday afternoon for her funeral, with people travelling from all over Canada to attend.
Speaking to Glacier Media Wednesday morning, father Aron Dunn said the family is really hurting.
“Tori will be missed and we are going to fight for justice,” says Aron.
On Sunday, June 16, 30-year-old Tori was found inside her Port Kells home around 10 p.m. with life-threatening injuries. Tori was stabbed and succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.
Police arrested a suspect near the residence shortly after.
Aron says his daughter was the victim of a random attack and the person was just released on bail before he broke into his daughter's home.
The suspect has not been charged in connection to Tori's death but was taken into custody for an unrelated charge.
“This was completely random and it should never have happened,” says Aron. “This guy should never have been on the streets.”
As the investigation is ongoing, Aron is limited in what he can share about the suspect. He says he's appreciative of the work the RCMP and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team are doing.
“They’re working tirelessly around the clock,” he says.
Aron promises to hold people accountable and to find justice for Tori.
“My fight is going to be about how these judges let these guys go and this catch-and-release thing they have going on in this province and how they're not implementing Bill C-48,” says Aron.
Bill C-48 is a reverse onus for serious violent offenders to get bail, where the accused person must demonstrate to the court why they should be released instead of the prosecution proving why they should remain behind bars.
Hailey Dunn, Tori’s cousin, says her family is strong and plans to see this through.
"It’s not just about the person who committed the act, but the people who let him do it. We hope no other family has to ever deal with this kind of pain,” says Hailey.
A GoFundMe campaign created by Hailey has raised more than $21,000.
“We plan on using that money to help the fight,” says Hailey.
Aron does not live in B.C. so the money raised will allow him to fly back and forth.
Tori was a young entrepreneur and owned her own landscaping business that she built from scratch.
“She was living her best life, she was in love, she was an avid outdoors person, she was healthy,” says Aron. “This could have happened to anybody's daughter.”
Only family and friends are asked to attend Wednesday's funeral in Surrey.
On Tuesday, a viewing was held.
“That was really tough. Probably the toughest thing as a father I’ll ever have to do in my life,” says Aron.
