This year’s parliamentary session has ended for the summer. North Island – Powell River MP Rachel Blaney, is kicking off the summer by reflecting on measures the NDP secured for people in North Island – Powell River over the last year, according to a media release. Blaney stated it’s also important to look forward to what work still needs to be done.
“Every person should be able to get the medication they need without worrying about what the cost to their budget is going to be, finding housing they can afford, and women should be the ones making decisions about their own health,” stated Blaney. “New Democrats have spent the last year fighting tooth and nail to make this a reality. While we’ve been doing this, Pierre Poilievre and the Conservatives have spent the year trying their best to stand in the way of these supports.”
Before fighting to get free medication for people with diabetes and birth control for women, the Conservatives shamefully tried to bring forward an amendment to block these measures, stated Blaney. They’ve also spent decades voting against some of the measures the NDP delivered on this year, such as paid sick leave for workers and better protections for workers fighting for fair wages, she added.
“It’s no surprise that the same Conservatives who cut $43 billion from our health care system while handing over billions to rich CEOs have spent the last year trying to stop people in North Island – Powell River from getting medications they need, free of charge,” stated Blaney. “Or, having their dentist trips covered. Poilievre’s Conservatives aren’t in it for you, The Liberals delay and delay until the NDP forces them to act. Only New Democrats are delivering results for you and your family.
“As we head into the summer months, I’m going to keep listening to people in our community and make sure that I bring back their concerns to Ottawa for the next session, so that New Democrats keep delivering for you.”
