A B.C. family of three is dead after a head-on crash with a transport truck on a highway near Agassiz.
Police responded to a serious collision on Lougheed Highway at 3:27 a.m. on July 9 and found that a vehicle and transport truck had collided.
Two adults, a man in his early 40s and a woman in her late 30s, were in the vehicle and were pronounced dead at the scene.
"The Agassiz RCMP member actually noticed that there was something moving in the back of a vehicle, which ended up being an infant," says Sgt. Andy Lot.
A baby, under two years old, was airlifted to hospital but died a few hours later.
"It is a tragic incident," says Lot. "This is hard on our community. This is a sad situation as the whole family has passed away."
The married couple and baby were living in Deroche. They do not have any extended family living in British Columbia, Glacier Media was told.
Lot commends the heroic efforts of first responders and hospital staff who tried to save the baby.
"I would like to thank my officers and all the first responders who attended this tragic incident for their hard work and dedication to serving the victims and their families,” he says.
The driver of the tractor-trailer did not suffer any injuries.
"At this time, we do not know what led to the accident; however, one vehicle did cross over a line. We don't know which vehicle did that," says Lot.
Alcohol and drugs are not suspected as a cause of the fatal collision.
"We are working on supporting all those who were affected from this crash and loss of an entire family. I have engaged the mental health supports for all of those involved,” says Lot.
Lougheed Highway was closed for several hours and reopened at 5 p.m. on July 9.
The collision occurred in the 8100-block of Lougheed Highway.
RCMP along with the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service are trying to determine what caused the crash.
Anyone who has dash-camera footage or video from the area between 3 and 3:45 a.m. is asked to contact police at 604-796-2211.
