Texada Island Non-profit Seniors Housing Society (TINSHS) hosted an online and live auction, plus a classy high-tea event in April that raised $11,958 toward its capital campaign fund.
"Combined with the six-week Fall Frolic [Facebook] auction before Christmas, we have raised $16,651, with our auction events," said TINSHS president Cathy Brown.
The Peak reported last year that TINSHS had been raising funds and holding community engagement sessions in order to get shovels in the ground and start building much-needed seniors housing on the region's biggest Gulf Island.
Brown said previously that the biggest obstacle to building seniors housing on Texada is obtaining title to buildable land. However, the nonprofit has identified an eight-acre parcel owned by Selkirk Mountain Forest within Gillies Bay Improvement District that is suitable for development.
"The capital campaign thermometer now reads $195,450 of the $250,000 goal," said Brown. "Both the qathet Regional District and Agricultural Land Commission [ALC] representatives braved the mid-month BC Ferries excitement to do the site inspection."
Brown said the ALC will likely review the TINSHS case in June.
The online auction began in early April with many prizes on offer, including local artwork and getaways. On April 13 a live in-person auction took place along with the high-tea serving.
"The hot bidding over [artist] Rodger Hort's Clam Bay Cabins was a highlight," said Brown. "We are ever so grateful to our supporters on both sides of the Malaspina Strait, both as donors and participants."
