qathet Art Centre (qAC) launched its group art exhibition and fundraiser, titled Present, on December 6.
The gallery above Powell River Public Library was brimming with curious patrons and excited artists who gathered, observed and spoke about their artwork that was also for sale. This year's show and fundraiser was eclectic, with many new exhibitors, but also some who are well-known around town and beyond, such Tla'amin Nation carver Sherman Pallen and painter Autumn Skye.
qAC council member and curator Karen Kamon opened the evening by allowing each artist to speak about their work and themselves.Visual artist Jo Forrest said she was excited to have her work on the walls. Although Forrest is fairly new to the qathet region, her work has made an impression, successfully selling several pieces in recent months.
Many folks were drawn to artist Yeonomi Kim's piece called The Light in the Forest, a lamp depicting a forest scene after rain. Kim's work aims to highlight environmental pollution and excessive consumption by using discarded wood, fabric and reused plastics.
Approximately 88 artists have work on display, which will be available for viewing until February 20, 2025, at 215-6975 Alberni Street.
Artists receive 70 per cent of profits from their art sale; the remaining 30 per cent goes to qathet Art Council. All contributions to this annual fundraiser go to the ongoing work of the art council and centre in support of local arts and culture.
