Art Beat: There’s music aplenty this weekend

Celebrated Canadian country-folk artist Lynn Miles performs at St. Bartholomew’s Church in Gibsons on Friday, Jan. 31. Winner of the Juno for 2011 songwriter of the year, with a 12-album catalogue of tunes, Miles sings about “love lost and gained, sketched with dark hues and rising tempos.” Opening for Miles is Deanna Knight, accompanied by Anna Lumiere on piano. Showtime is 8 p.m., doors at 7:30. Tickets $15 at the Lower Gibsons One Flower One Leaf Gallery, MELOmania in Roberts Creek and Strait Music in Sechelt. $20 at the door. 

Artesia 

The Arts Centre in Sechelt is transformed into the Artesia Coffee House once again with the Friday, Jan. 31 opening of a new season of monthly shows through May. (See our feature article in this section.) Featuring Ken Capron, Patricia Burnett, Janice Williams, and Joe Stanton. There’s a new start time of 7:30 p.m. $10 at the door.

Petunia and the Vipers 

You can hear some cutting edge country and roots music at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons Saturday, Feb. 1, 7:30 p.m. with the return of Petunia and the Vipers. The guys – yep, all guys – are a true Canadian original, combining elements of country from the ’20s to the ’70s along with “country blues, western swing, alt country rock, Mexicana, French cabaret, Romanian, ragtime, jazz, punk and folk music.” Tickets are $20 at the Fish Market in Sechelt, Gibsons Florist, and www.share-there.com, $25 at the door.  

Andrew Collins Trio 

The seven-time Canadian Folk Music Award-winning Andrew Collins Trio plays a show at Coopers Green Hall in Halfmoon Bay on Saturday, Feb. 1. They offer “raw and grooving bluegrass music played with the grace and sophistication of a classical string quartet.” Tickets are $30 at Welcome Woods Market, Halfmoon Bay General Store and Pastimes in Sechelt. Doors at 7 p.m., show at 7:30 p.m.

Do-si-do 

If you like to square dance or want to give it a spin, you can promenade at a family-friendly event this weekend. Instructor and dance caller Paul Silveria and his backing musicians, the Still Creek Stringband, will whoop it up at High Beam Dreams Sunday, Feb. 2. Silveria teaches everyone the basics right on the spot. The Coast String Fiddlers play an opening set at 2:15 p.m., Silveria and the band are on at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 and $5 for kids in advance from various outlets and www.share-there.com, $20 at the door. 

Evening of Song 

Barbara McAfee performs “life-affirming, engaging, thoughtful, challenging, silly and participatory” tunes in The Spirit of Yes: A Joyful Evening of Song at St. Bartholomew’s Church in Gibsons on Saturday, Feb. 1, 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tickets $15 at the door. 

VR graffiti 

The current show at Gibsons Public Art Gallery, Ghosts of Graffiti, has a free virtual reality event on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 2 to 6 p.m. Marc-Andre Renaud brings his VR rig to help you spray graffiti all over the gallery walls, virtually. 

Yet more music 

• The Georgia Fats are helping Music Makers maestra Lynne Dickson celebrate her birthday on Friday, Jan. 31 at the Sechelt Legion. They’re getting an early start at 7 p.m. $15. 

• (Lynn also tells us she’s offering a 10-week Adult Beginner Fiddle Class starting on Monday, Feb. 10 at 11 a.m. at the Music Makers’ studio in Davis Bay. Email [email protected]

• The Steve Hinton Band invites you to “shake yo’ winter blues” at Gibsons Legion on Saturday, Feb. 1, starting at 8 p.m. 

• The second annual Wet’suwet’en Solidarity Event is at Roberts Creek Legion on Saturday, Feb. 1 with “artists, speakers, information, music and dance.” There’s a family-friendly ceremony from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., followed by a 19+ celebration. If you would like to perform, present, or otherwise get involved, contact the Legion. 

• The Blue Line Trio is in at Persephone Brewing in Gibsons on Sunday, Feb. 2 from 2 to 4 p.m. 

Apartheid fact and fiction 

Author Arushi Raina offers glimpses of South African apartheid in words and pictures, focusing on the 1976 Soweto youth uprising, followed by a discussion on how it echoes in current events in Canada and internationally, on Saturday, Feb. 1 at Gibsons Public Library, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. 

Cold War 

A romantic film story set in the music scene of post-war communist Poland, Yugoslavia and later Paris, the award-winning Cold War will be screened twice next week by the Sunshine Coast Film Society, at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons. The cold war of the title refers not only to the period, but to the relationship of lovers Wiktor and Zula. Monday, Feb. 3 and Tuesday the 4th at 7:30 p.m.
