Thankfully without injuries, an abandoned travel trailer up the B&K underwent, as NASA would put it, an RUD (Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly) and now there are bits of it 15 metres in every direction. Check the Facebook page “Roberts Creek Speaks!” for a work party that is being organized to remove the debris. Tipping fees are waived on these types of community cleanup projects – we just need to let the fine folks at the landfill know what we are up to. Random acts of kindness and our sense of humour make our community what it is. A tip o’ the hat to John Candy and SCTV for that title.
Beginning this Wednesday, the talented Wilde Kitchen hosts a weekly Games Night. Darts, dice, pool and, of course, food! A good way to while away an evening at our local, 7 to 9 p.m., 3064 Lower Rd. (that’s the Legion 219 BTW). Ask if they play Pit!
Also at the 219: The Peanut Butter Jam Food Bank Fundraiser this Saturday, Jan. 11, featuring Al Harlow of Prism. Next Saturday, the 18th, is the Invitational Birthday Jam with the Daggers and nine thrown-together jam bands. (Whose birthday? Mine. How old now? 60. What? How did that happen?) More next week.
In keeping with last week’s theme, more chances to get your body in motion: Yoga by the Sea hosts a men’s series entitled Movement, Mindfulness, and Community Connection, an eight-week program with Melissa Lyons, Jan. 9 to March 5. With a daily home practice guide and instructional recordings, and including a five-hour silent retreat, it offers a way for stress to have less impact on your life. A commitment to attend all sessions is necessary. Limited to eight participants: 21 hours in class plus home practice and recordings $300 (payment plan is available), Thursdays 7 to 9 p.m.
Russ Qureshi, fourth dan black belt instructor from the Shohei Juku Aikido Sunshine Coast Dojos, offers two classes of aikido in the Creek weekly. Aikido is a Japanese form of self-defence and martial art that uses locks, holds, throws, and the opponent’s own movements. Monday and Wednesday evening, 1164 Roberts Creek Rd., 7 to 8:30 p.m. Contact [email protected] or 604-741-7119 for more.
If jiu-jitsu is the gentle art of folding clothes while still being worn then aikido would be the art of putting those clothes away, no?
Another tip o’ the hat, this time to my friend Rashmi Singh, as she enters the 12th year of serving her delectable food out of the kitchen at RC Hall. Curry in the Creek, her amazing Indian tucker, is available from 3 to 6 p.m. each Thursday. Pre-order is highly recommended at www.curryinthecreek.com. She buys locally as much as possible from Butcher Dave, IGA, Jean’s Organics and local farmers. Rashmi has generously supported her community on many occasions with her food made from the heart with love! Also, the Hall offers a commercial kitchen for rent at $75/day. Inquire at 604-740-7738 if this interests you.
