A 39-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a suspected arson fire that destroyed a garage in Duncan last weekend.

On Saturday evening, police and firefighters responded to a report of a fire in a vacant lot in the 300-block of Brae Road.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP media relations officer Const. Julie Miller said the fire quickly spread and engulfed a nearby detached garage.

“Fortunately no one was injured, and thanks to witnesses’ detailed description of the suspect, police were able to locate the man and take him into custody,” she said in a statement.

The man was released without charge, but police say they will seek charge approval once the investigation is complete.

Fire investigators and multiple RCMP units are involved in the case, Miller said.

Anyone with information about the incident or who has related video footage is asked to contact North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-748-5522.
