Man accused of setting Vancouver cops on fire bailed multiple times

The man charged after two Vancouver Police Department officers were set on fire is due in Vancouver Provincial Court May 1 for a bail hearing.

Jordan Paul Campbell Mutual, 40, is charged with assaulting and also failing to assist a police officer. He also faces multiple other charges involving alleged violence.

The police incident happened April 10 when Downtown Eastside foot patrol officers were trying to detain a man for jaywalking.

The VPD say the man was wanted for other offences and tried to run but was caught. Police say that's when they believe he used a flammable substance to set the officers' uniforms on fire.

The suspect escaped and the officers put out the fires themselves, and other officers later arrested the man.

Police say one officer is now recovering at home after receiving treatment from paramedics, while the second officer did not sustain physical injuries.

Police said the suspect received treatment at hospital for burns and remained in custody on Saturday.

Other charges

Mutual has received bail Oct. 24, 2022, Feb. 3, 2023, Dec. 4, 2023 and May 3, 2024.

He is charged with failing to comply with court release conditions March 12.

Mutual is charged with possessing a shotgun without a licence or registration and possessing a prohibited or restricted weapon knowing he had no licence or registration in connection with events July 31, 2022. He was also charged with possessing a weapon dangerous to the public peace for that day.

In connection with events Sept. 13, 2022, Mutual is charged with assaulting and uttering threats to two women.

Also for that day, he is charged with possession of a firearm without a licence or registration, carrying or transporting a firearm without reasonable precautions and failing to comply with an undertaking by carrying ammunition.

Regarding incidents on Nov. 17, 2022, Mutual is charged with two counts of failing to comply with a release order.
