IHIT investigating suspicious death of missing 17-year-old in Surrey

Police are investigating a suspicious death in the Port Kells area of Surrey.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the investigation from the Surrey RCMP.

Cpl. Sarbjit Sanghan said on July 19 at 5:30 a.m., police located a deceased person in the 17900-block of 99A Avenue.

Surrey RCMP frontline officers and the General Investigations Unit were deployed to the scene and officers remain in the area to gather additional evidence.

Sanghan said in a press release that the preliminary investigation has determined the death of this person to be suspicious.

“At this stage, based on initial observations and information collected, investigators believe this to be an isolated incident. The person has been identified and family of deceased have been notified.”

The victim is being identified to further the investigation.

Wenyan Michael Zhao, 17, of Langley was reported missing by his family on the evening of July 18. He was last seen in the 5900-block of 206 Street, Langley.

IHIT is looking for information regarding the movement of Wenyan between 9 p.m. July 18 to 5:30 a.m. on July 19.
