UNUSUAL FIND: A mysterious bear paw was found recently on the beach near Myrtle Point. The finders are curious to discover how such an object could wash up on the beach.

British Columbia has a history of human feet being found on beaches, but one local resident says her 14-year-old granddaughter found a bear paw on the beach near Myrtle Point.

Dawn Stubbs, an 11-year resident of the qathet region, says she was walking her dog with her granddaughter on the beach in late June when her granddaughter discovered the paw.

“She came flying back with the dog and said: ‘there’s a bear paw on the beach,” said Stubbs. “We flew down the beach to see what this was about. There was this paw. It was a juvenile bear and we wondered how it got there. We could dream up a couple of scenarios. We are curious to know how this could happen and what was the reason.

“I did phone the conservation officer service but I didn’t hear back. I was interested in what they would think.”

Stubbs said the family went down to the beach four days later. Her granddaughter was sitting on the beach and what came up in the waves was the bear paw, again. She said the paw had decomposed somewhat.

“We threw it back in the ocean,” added Stubbs.
