Meet Sunshine Coast Regional District Area B candidate Justine Gabias

The following is a Q&A that was distributed to all Sunshine Coast Regional District candidates.

Candidate name

Justine Gabias

Age

40

Occupation (s)

Market Gardener, small-business owner

Which position are you running for?

Area B

Do you live in the area you're running for? For how long?

Yes! For 2.5 great years

What should the board be doing to meet the promise of stable year-round water supply?

The board must work collaboratively with SCRD staff to develop a robust, two-prong strategy of diversification of supply and reduction of demand. This includes exploring more aquifer and reservoir options, fixing leaks, targeting "water hogs," and incentivizing rain water capture.

How would you approach calls for new regulatory bylaws as the SCRD struggles to enforce its existing ones?

We must continue to review bylaw policies and lobby the provincial government to increase fine caps. We should push for bylaw enforcement to focus efforts on repeat and flagrant offenders.

Should the SCRD be preparing for climate change? How?

Absolutely. We must look at every issue through the lens of mitigating climate change, and strive to reduce emissions and build resilient communities. The SCRD's Strategic Plan is a great step forward; I intend to continue that work with dedication.

If not acclaimed: Coopers Green – what do you want to see happen?

The board, in consultation with residents and SCRD staff, must urgently agree on a realistic scenario to build this much-needed hall, so we can benefit from the time-sensitive grant.

The SCRD has seen major tax increases this year, what opportunities are there to mitigate these?

The SCRD can mitigate tax increases by continuously reviewing spending and identifying where cuts can occur, without reducing services to residents, or compromising the health of our community assets.

How would you balance pushback on development with need for housing?

The Coast desperately needs housing for essential workers. We must review our OCPs and identify specific areas where density can be increased, so we can create opportunities for sustainable, affordable housing with minimal impact on the land and infrastructure.

What do you wish we'd asked you?

What do you hope your community will be like at the end of your term? What is your vision for its future?
