The following is a Q&A that was distributed to all District of Sechelt candidates.
Candidate name
Brenda Rowe
Age
60
Occupation (s)
RN, Coordinator operating room at SH
Which position are you running for?
Councillor
Live in Sechelt? For how long?
Since 1996
Incumbent? If so how many years on council?
4 years on council
What are your priorities if elected?
Water & infrastructure; Housing; OCP update; Planning for climate change impacts; Improved engagement with community.
Should Sechelt facilitate creation of more affordable housing? How?
Yes. Continue to build our affordable housing reserve; Look at opportunities for land acquisition, perhaps partnering with SD46. Continue to implements recommendations from the Housing Needs Report; Continue to invest in the Affordable Housing Society to build their capacity
Should Sechelt prepare for climate change? If so how?
It's not a choice. Yes. We need to be planning on how we are going to adapt to meet the challenge of sea rise, as one example.
Is Sechelt managing growth appropriately?
Honestly, the type of growth needed (ie rentals) should have started a decade ago. We are now in a crisis and trying to catch up. Housing was a major ask of the community in 2018. We are trying to deliver.
How would you balance pushback on development with need for housing?
You can't say "stop development" in one breath and "we need housing" in the next. A community needs to be able to house those that care for their most vulnerable populations. That's essential workers. I support housing that makes sense.
What is the greatest infrastructure challenge facing Sechelt?
Our greatest challenge is not one piece of infrastructure. It's that meaningful work to identify our assets and their condition only began this term, which will identify priorities.
What do you wish we'd asked you?
What's been your biggest success and largest challenge during that past 4 years?
