The following is a Q&A that was distributed to all District of Sechelt candidates.
Candidate name
Alton Toth
Age
36
Occupation (s)
Self-employed. Among other things.
Which position are you running for?
Councillor
Live in Sechelt? For how long?
Born here. Back 2014
Incumbent? If so how many years on council?
4 years on council
What are your priorities if elected?
Speculation and vacancy tax for Sechelt; Improved transparency from local government; Downtown revitalization tax exemption program; Greater walk-ability between neighbourhoods.
Should Sechelt facilitate creation of more affordable housing? How?
Continuing to move forward rental housing in our downtown core is critical. Our new zoning bylaw didn't go far enough in allowing secondary dwellings on more parcels, mostly because of the restrictions of the current OCP.
Should Sechelt prepare for climate change? If so how?
Climate change is coming. Pushing for alternate highway, armoring our shores and considering storm surge are going to be critical as we build new infrastructure and upgrade what we have.
Is Sechelt managing growth appropriately?
Not entirely. We need more multi-family (duplexes, townhouses, etc), and less of developers simply building what's easy. Our OCP and zoning restrict the ability to change direction without creating an adversarial situation between the community and builders.
How would you balance pushback on development with need for housing?
As our population ages and retires, we need housing for those who would contribute to our workforce. Those working in our schools, our hospitals, our care homes, and our retail shops and restaurants. More green-space in our developments is critical.
What is the greatest infrastructure challenge facing Sechelt?
Ensuring our sewer service is properly funded so we can address the issues caused by inflow & infiltration. Reducing I&I increases the number of homes we can connect to sewer.
