Upper Deck accessibility

Sechelt’s Advisory Planning Commission was set to consider a development permit Jan. 11 (after Coast Reporter’s deadline) for the biggest renovation needed at the Upper Deck shelter now that it’s become a homeless shelter.

Although all the work needed to allow the shelter to open in late December was in place, the rezoning also required BC Housing to make the Upper Deck, which is on the second floor of 5653 Wharf Ave., fully accessible.

The plan going before the APC calls for an external elevator to be added to the building’s west wall, near the current staircase. The elevator addition will include the elevator shaft and space for entrance lobbies with automatic doors at the ground level and second floor.

New staff appointments

Chief administrative officer Andrew Yeates says Sechelt is heading into 2018 with a full management team in place after the recent hiring of a new director of planning and development and a communications manager.

Tracy Corbett took the reins as director of planning and development on Monday.

Corbett is a registered professional planner with over 25 years’ experience in university, municipal and regional government settings, and comes to Sechelt after six years as the manager of planning and sustainable development for the City of Airdrie, Alta. She did similar work for Victoria, Calgary, Kelowna and Toronto.

Julie Rogers is expected to join the district as communications manager on or before Feb. 1.

Rogers has more than 10 years experience in communications, including four in local government settings, most recently with the City of Fort St. John.
