Gibsons Gracie Jiu Jitsu just celebrated 15 years of teaching on the Sunshine Coast. Brought to Gibsons in 2008 by head instructor Shawn Phillips, not only was this the first Jiu Jitsu club on the Coast but also the first certified training centre (CTC) for the discipline in Canada. Authorized by the Gracie family in Torrance California there are now hundreds of CTCs teaching in 192 countries. Through the years there have been hundreds of locals, both youth and adults who have passed through the doors and learned self-defence techniques that have been tried and tested for over 100 years. Almost wiped out by COVID, the school continues to survive and teach in Gibsons, with the recent culmination of students hard work resulting in five new black belts last year. “Gracie Jiu Jitsu is meant to be a self defence system first, and taught in a safe manner,” said Phillips.
