Storm plays inaugural exhibition games

Ringette

There is a storm brewing on the Sunshine Coast.

Sunshine Coast Storm ringette began play last November as part of the Sunshine Coast Regional District’s learn to play recreational ringette program.

Two six-week sessions were offered at the Gibsons and Area Community Centre throughout the winter season, which saw girls and boys ranging in ages from five to 13 come out on the ice to learn to play the game.

During the 12 weeks, each player progressed in skating ability, skill level and enthusiasm for learning the sport. The sessions were completed with a unique opportunity for the players to put their new skills to practice during two exhibition games.

On Feb. 28, the Storm travelled to Port Coquitlam to play two exhibition games in the 2015 Timbits Jamboree Tournament.

The first game was against Comox Valley U10 Comets, a team that also recently formed on Vancouver Island. The game went back and forth, with the Storm losing 5-4.

The second game was against the Port Coquitlam/Ridge Meadows U10 Huskies and was an action-packed match, with the Storm picking up a 6-5 win.

Throughout both games, the goalkeeping was outstanding, supported by strong offensive play from centres and forwards and great hustle by the defence to protect the net.

The Storm also greatly appreciated six players from the Port Coquitlam/Ridge Meadows Ringette Association that joined the Storm for both games to provide mentorship.

Storm has linked with the North West Vancouver Ringette Association and hopes to play exhibition games with teams on the Lower Mainland and Comox Valley next season.

If you are interested to learn more about ringette and want to join next year, email [email protected], or find them on Facebook. Players ages five and up as well as adults are welcome.

Also watch for try ringette for free demo sessions next fall at both the Sechelt and Gibsons arenas.
