Two Team BC athletes from the Sunshine Coast have been giving their all at the 2017 Canada Summer Games and doing their home towns proud.
Lucy Schick, the 16-year-old mountain biker from Gibsons, had a strong showing in the relay race on Aug. 1 where she was instrumental in securing a bronze medal for her team.
On July 30 she finished 11th in the cross-country race out of 19 riders and on Aug. 3 she finished ninth in the sprint against 17 other racers.
While her races are now over, another Coast contestant is just getting started at the Canada Summer Games.
Participating in the games for the Special Olympics on Team BC is swimmer Genny Verge from Sechelt.
Her first day of competition was Aug. 8 and she showed her skill in the 100-metre freestyle swim at the Pan Am pool, taking a silver medal for her effort.
She was eager for the following days’ competitions in various swimming disciplines that were set to wrap up on Aug. 11.
“The swimming has been top notch,” her coach and mother Cathy Verge said this week.
“We trained with Team BC Aug. 4 at UBC and they have made us feel part of the team from the start,” she said, noting it’s been a “great feeling.”
Cathy and Genny are staying on campus and being bused to and from the events at the Pan Am Pool in Winnipeg.
“Winnipeg have been gracious hosts,” she said.
As of Wednesday, Team BC was sitting in third place overall at the 2017 Canada Summer Games, having won 34 gold medals, 27 silver and 16 bronze for a total of 77. Team Ontario was in first place with 121 medals and Team Quebec was in second with 82.
Team BC has a total of 455 athletes, coaches, managers, technical support and mission staff representing B.C. at the games in Winnipeg, which are set to wrap up on Aug. 13.
“Team BC athletes are the best young developing talent in this province and are our future national and international champions,” a press release from Team BC stated.
