Re: “For-profit care looking less and less palatable,” Editorial, Feb. 3.

Seniors care on the Sunshine Coast is a critical issue for our community. The question is how best to care for people in our community as they age and ensure our loved ones have end-of-life care that protects their dignity.

The debate has been “profit” versus “government,” but I believe we have to focus on the best interests of the stakeholders. At the centre of this discussion are two stakeholder groups: those who need care, and the caregivers who provide it. Over the past year there has been a lot of commentary as our two aging facilities, Shorncliffe and Totem Lodge, will be replaced by a new, purpose-built facility with 20 more beds. Some of the discussion has been constructive, but regrettably, some has led to fear and anxiety about these plans.

To our seniors, I want to say that your care comes above all else. The two facilities, which have served our community for almost 40 years, are now inadequate in many ways. The BC Senior’s Advocate report (January 2017) shows serious issues with ongoing care, including that both Shorncliffe and Totem Lodge significantly exceed the provincial average of daily use of physical restraint. This is hard on seniors, their loved ones, and their caregivers. The new facility will be purpose-built to serve the needs of our seniors and caregivers. It is modular and will be expanded to grow with the growing needs of our community, as our budgets allow.

We know that relational care leads to the best healthcare outcomes and that caregivers are at a greater risk of workplace injury or burn-out. Research shows that purpose-built workspaces increase safety for workers. We also know that Trellis has stated publicly that it intends to enter into talks with the unions to staff the new facilities. I have been a public-sector union member for over 15 years, and I know the uncertainty that comes with the end of a contract. I strongly believe that the well-paying jobs that you hold today must be retained in our community. I will work to support you in the transition to protect your employment and ensure that the established caring relationships you have built with those you care for is uninterrupted.
