The wonderful volunteers at the Health Care Auxiliary perform an important community service in helping the residents at our long-term care facilities, and the community should be grateful for their generosity. I have great difficulty understanding why that could not continue under the arrangements being put in place to manage the new Silverstone Care Centre. The auxiliary volunteers’ work is in support of patients and residents, not the facility itself, to provide comforts and amenities above and beyond those funded by the facility or the government. Many facilities in B.C. similar to Silverstone have well-functioning volunteer organizations that enhance the lives of their residents. If it is true that the present auxiliary is only willing to help out those in need who are resident in publicly owned care centres, perhaps an organization with a more flexible ideology could be established to help the residents at the new facility.
