A 28-foot Bayliner pleasure craft caught fire at Plumper Cove on Keats Island on Tuesday afternoon, with no passengers onboard.
A crew from Gibsons-based RCM-SAR Station 14 was dispatched to attend to the fire after it was called in at approximately 2:50 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30.
The boat was let go from the dock to float out to sea to prevent the fire from spreading, which is “standard operating procedure,” according to a Joint Rescue Coordination Centre spokesperson in Victoria.
The crew towed it out of the way of other vessels and are ensuring people keep a safe distance as it burns to the water line.
By 4 p.m. the boat was approximately one mile off Keats Island near Melody Point, heading towards Gambier Island in Howe Sound.
