A bit of history was made last Tuesday, Feb. 14 in the B.C. Legislature in Victoria with the first meeting of the opposition standing committee for agriculture and food.
New Democrat MLA for Powell River - Sunshine Coast Nicholas Simons is part of this committee, along with several other area MLAs. It’s the first committee of its kind and was created to provide a voice for agriculture, something Simons said is lacking with the current Liberal government.
“We, as representatives from the Official Opposition and Independent Opposition, will embark on doing a job that B.C. wants and needs,” Simons said. “We will be visiting towns and cities, across our province, asking for input on B.C. agriculture and food. Our open and transparent committee stands in stark contrast to the B.C. Liberal closed door approach to governance.”
A Facebook page is being set up for the group where residents can keep track of the committee’s progress.
Simons said they will be announcing their first provincial tour stop soon.
“We are genuinely proud to begin this work,” he said.
