Howard and Mary White published the first edition of Raincoast Chronicles in 1972 with the intent to “put B.C. character on the record.” Since then the series has focused on publishing the kind of Pacific Northwest storytelling only found here. In Raincoast Chronicles 23, guest editor Peter A. Robson brings together West Coast history, folklore, poetry and over 100 photos from Harbour Publishing’s catalogue in honour of Harbour’s 40th anniversary.

This volume features Clayton Mack’s story of nearly getting killed by a grizzly bear and Grant Lawrence’s painfully awkward experience with a bunch of hippies at a nude potluck. The anthology also includes poetry from Al Purdy and Anne Cameron and Stephen Hume’s meditation on the rain as part of West Coast life, along with a multitude of illustrations and photos.

Howard White is the publisher of Harbour Publishing and Douglas & McIntyre, both prominent B.C. publishing companies. He started editing the Raincoast Chronicles series in the early 1970s and his own books include A Hard Man to Beat, Spilsbury’s Coast, The Accidental Airline, Writing in the Rain and The Sunshine Coast. White has been awarded the Order of B.C., the Order of Canada, the Canadian Historical Association’s Career Award for Regional History, the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour and the Jim Douglas Publisher of the Year Award.

Peter A. Robson has authored hundreds of articles and has served as editor for several magazines, including Pacific Yachting, Cottage and Cottage Life West. He has authored or co-authored books about commercial fishing, forestry, tow boating and salmon farming. He lives in Garden Bay, B.C.
