Gigi Hoeller is holding her annual show of artwork at the Seaside Centre, Sechelt, this weekend, June 27 and 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. She’s painted lots of new landscapes and totems and this year she is accompanied by Pia Sillem of Earl’s Cove, a ceramic artist who creates natural works of art.
Open mike
It’s open mike night at More Café and Bake Shop, Sunnycrest Mall, Gibsons at 6:30 p.m. this Friday, June 26. It’s hosted by Adelene da Soul Poet. Bring your poems, bring your laughter, bring your friends.
Garden show
The Garden, an exhibit by Out of Bounds Fibre Arts group, opens at Gibsons Public Art Gallery with a reception on Saturday, June 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. The garden is a cultural metaphor millennia old that has evoked some of the greatest art ever made, and has been especially important to western culture as the Industrial Revolution spread its tarmac and toxins through the landscape.

On Wednesday, July 1 the gallery holds its annual bag of books sale. Buy a cotton eco-bag with a print of Molly’s Reach on it by Jan Poynter for $10 and fill it up with a selection of books.
Reading and conversation
This writer is the warm up act for an interesting reading and book launch this Sunday, June 28 at 2 p.m. at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery. I’ll be reading from my work-in-progress, Siege Orphan, and Gibsons author Blair McDowell will be reading and inviting conversation about her latest book, Romantic Road. All are welcome to fill up the gallery at 431 Marine Dr.
Dance invite
The Adult Cardio Cabaret™ Crew of Sechelt’s Coast Academy of Dance (CAD) has been invited to compete in the 2015 Dance World Cup at Whistler, July 1 to 5. This group of women, Mary Basas, Karen Nield, Teresa Nightingale, Susan Seabrook and Ivana Cappelletto, are all well over the age of 40, come from different backgrounds and share the same passion for dance. In early June their dedication and hard work were evident at the CAD year end recital where their energetic Burnin’ Up: The Menopause Dance routine was enthusiastically received.
Ivana Cappelletto is the founder of the dance style and the group’s oldest member, choreographer and dancinator. The group asks if anyone can help them out by hosting them on July 4 or 5 in Whistler. If so, contact Cappelletto at 604-999-9276.

Wrenched: the film
You are invited to see the recently released 90-minute documentary Wrenched, at the Gibsons United Church on Tuesday, June 30 at 5:30 p.m., the eve of Canada Day (http://wrenched-themovie.com). This film has had numerous international screenings this year and now comes to the Sunshine Coast. It profiles the impact the late Edward Abbey had on environmentalism in the west and the importance of voices and action when the integrity of one’s home place is in jeopardy. Roche’s face
David Roche is out on the edge again. After 25 years as a pioneering solo performer, actor, author and more, he has heard, “You are so courageous!” too many times. He wants the world to know that he actually has a very bad attitude. His show is back by popular demand. He reprises My Face is Acting Up! on Friday, July 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, 5714 Medusa St., Sechelt. Admission is $10 at the door (no one turned away). The opening act is Donna Shugar, who performs Who Says 16 is Sweet? Shugar is recently retired from a very serious occupation and is enjoying exploring the lighter side of life. She loves to tell stories about family history, especially when they are funny. All proceeds after expenses will be donated to the Jellyfish Project (www.thejellyfishproject.org) in gratitude for the work of Daniel Kingsbury and his wonderful colleagues. Dotty program
The Sunshine Coast Arts Council is thrilled to announce the third year of the Summer Art Program for Kids (aged nine to 12) with DOT artist Rogest (Ron Steven). Not only do the kids create works of art, they create a collaborative art piece for the Sunshine Coast Conservation Association (SCCA) to use for a fundraising piece to auction off or make prints. The kids also learn about the ocean and the environment. This year the program will run from July 6 to 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
